A detailed 1632 Baroque engraving by Paulus Pontius depicting the lamentation of Christ, rendered with technical precision and dramatic light.
This engraving by Paulus Pontius, titled 'Christi Funus', depicts the lamentation over the body of Christ. Pontius, a skilled Flemish engraver, worked closely with Peter Paul Rubens to translate the dramatic compositions of the master into the medium of print. The scene shows the lifeless body of Christ supported by figures, including a Capuchin friar, while angels attend to the instruments of the Passion. The composition follows the conventions of the Flemish Baroque, utilising strong contrasts of light and shadow to create a sense of volume and emotional weight.
The technical execution demonstrates the precision of Pontius in his use of the burin. He creates varied textures through the density and direction of his lines, from the soft drapery of the garments to the more rugged surfaces of the rocky grotto setting. The inclusion of the crown of thorns and the nails in the foreground provides a narrative focus on the suffering of Christ. The figures are arranged in a pyramidal structure, a common device in religious art of the period to guide the viewer through the scene. The presence of the Capuchin friar reflects the specific devotional context for which the work was intended, connecting the biblical narrative to the contemporary religious practices of the seventeenth century. This print is a fine example of the collaborative relationship between painter and engraver that defined the dissemination of visual culture in the Low Countries during the seventeenth century.
