A detailed 1718 etching by Cornelis van der Sys depicting a Dutch sword polisher at work, from the Menselyk Bedryf series.
This etching, titled De Zwaardveger, originates from the series Menselyk Bedryf (Human Occupations), published in 1718. Cornelis van der Sys provides a detailed look into the daily life of a seventeenth-century Dutch tradesman. The composition centres on a sword polisher standing in his workshop, holding a blade for inspection. A second figure sits at a workbench, engaged in the meticulous task of finishing metalwork. The background reveals a glimpse of a Dutch street scene, providing context to the urban environment where such artisans operated.
The print is characteristic of the period, combining technical precision with a moralising tone. The accompanying Dutch text, written by Jan van Gysen, reflects the cultural tendency to pair visual depictions of labour with philosophical or religious commentary. The verses contrast the violence associated with the sword against the peaceful nature of a lamb, suggesting that the artisan's work exists within a broader social and ethical framework.
Visually, the work employs fine, controlled lines to define the textures of the workshop, the clothing of the figures, and the architectural elements of the building. The use of cross-hatching creates depth and shadow, drawing the eye toward the central interaction between the two men. A dog sits patiently in the foreground, a common motif in Dutch genre prints that adds a sense of domestic realism to the scene. This print offers a window into the specialised trades that supported the economy of the Dutch Republic, capturing the quiet focus of a craftsman at work. It is a fine example of how printmaking served as both a record of contemporary life and a vehicle for didactic poetry during the early eighteenth century.
