Description

A sombre, atmospheric etching by Matthijs Maris, depicting a lone labourer sowing seeds in a field, inspired by the work of Jean-François Millet.

Matthijs Maris, a member of the Hague School, produced this etching as a direct interpretation of Jean-François Millet's iconic subject. The work depicts a lone agricultural labourer in the act of sowing seeds across a field. In the background, a secondary figure guides a team of oxen, providing a sense of scale and rural activity. The composition relies on a sombre, atmospheric quality, typical of Maris's later output, where form often dissolves into shadow and light. Unlike the more literal interpretations of rural life common in the mid-nineteenth century, this print prioritises mood and texture. The etching process allows for a soft, tonal rendering of the landscape, moving away from sharp outlines toward a more painterly effect. The figure of the sower is captured in a rhythmic, forward-leaning motion, his body integrated into the dark, earthy tones of the soil. The sky remains indistinct, suggesting the early hours of the morning or the onset of dusk. Maris spent much of his career moving between the Netherlands, France, and eventually London. His fascination with the works of the Barbizon School, particularly Millet, provided a foundation for his own explorations of peasant life. This print demonstrates his technical ability to translate the heavy, tactile nature of oil painting into the delicate medium of etching. By focusing on the solitary worker, Maris captures a quiet, repetitive aspect of agrarian existence. The work avoids unnecessary detail, choosing instead to convey the weight and gravity of the labourer's task through subtle gradations of tone. It remains a representative example of how Dutch artists of the period engaged with international influences while developing their own distinct, atmospheric visual language.
