A delicate watercolour and ink drawing by Cornelis Saftleven from 1677, 'De verkondiging aan de herders' (The Annunciation to the Shepherds) depicts the biblical scene of an angel announcing the birth of Jesus to shepherds.
Cornelis Saftleven (1607-1681) was a Dutch Golden Age painter known for his genre scenes, portraits, and biblical subjects. This watercolour and ink drawing, titled 'De verkondiging aan de herders' (The Annunciation to the Shepherds), dates from 1677. It depicts the biblical scene where an angel announces the birth of Jesus to shepherds. The composition is divided into two distinct zones. The upper portion of the drawing is filled with a multitude of angels, rendered in delicate detail, floating amidst clouds. Below, the shepherds and their flock are depicted in a more earthly setting. The artist uses fine lines and washes of watercolour to create a sense of depth and atmosphere. The figures are expressive, capturing the shepherds' surprise and awe at the celestial visitation. Saftleven's skill in rendering both the ethereal and the mundane is evident in this work, blending the divine with the everyday.
