A detailed seventeenth-century Dutch etching depicting a pewterer at work in his shop, from the series Menselyk Bedryf.
This etching, titled De Tinnegieter (The Pewterer), originates from the series Menselyk Bedryf (Human Occupations), published in Amsterdam during the late seventeenth century. The work depicts a traditional pewter workshop, a common subject for Dutch artists who documented the daily labour and trades of the period. The composition focuses on the artisan at his counter, meticulously finishing a plate, while a customer enters the shop from the street. The shelves behind the craftsman are filled with finished wares, including plates, tankards, and vessels, which demonstrate the variety of goods produced by such workshops.
Van der Sys employs a precise, linear style typical of Dutch printmaking from this era. The cross-hatching provides texture to the metal surfaces and the interior shadows, creating a sense of depth within the confined space of the shop. Through the open doorway, a glimpse of the Dutch streetscape provides context for the location of the business. The inclusion of didactic verse at the top and bottom of the print is characteristic of the moralising tone often found in seventeenth-century Dutch publications, where the physical act of crafting metal serves as a metaphor for the refinement of the human spirit. The print offers a clear view into the material culture of the time, documenting the tools, clothing, and architectural details of a working-class environment. It remains a valuable record of the economic and social life in the Netherlands during the late seventeenth century, capturing the quiet industry of a specialised trade.
