A detailed seventeenth-century etching depicting a Dutch brickmaker at work, part of the Menselyk Bedryf series documenting traditional trades.
This etching, titled De Tichelaar, originates from the series Menselyk Bedryf, a collection documenting various trades and occupations in the late seventeenth-century Netherlands. The work depicts a brickmaker at his station, accompanied by assistants who shape and prepare the clay. The composition balances the foreground activity of the workers with a distant view of a kiln and river transport, providing context for the industrial scale of brick production during this period.
The artist, Cornelis van der Sys, employs a precise etching technique to capture the textures of the clay, the wooden workbench, and the surrounding environment. The inclusion of text above and below the image frame is characteristic of the didactic nature of the Menselyk Bedryf series, which often paired visual representations of labour with moralising verses. These verses draw parallels between the physical act of brickmaking and spiritual themes, reflecting the cultural values of the time.
Van der Sys demonstrates a clear grasp of perspective and anatomical proportion, typical of the period's focus on observational accuracy. The scene offers a glimpse into the daily life of Dutch artisans, documenting the tools and methods employed in the construction industry. The print serves as a historical record of early modern manufacturing processes, stripped of romanticism and presented with a focus on the mechanics of the trade. The fine lines and cross-hatching create a sense of depth, drawing the viewer into the workspace while maintaining the formal structure of a book illustration. This piece is a valuable example of how print culture functioned as both a source of information and a vehicle for social commentary in the Dutch Republic.
