A sophisticated Northern Mannerist allegorical drawing by Cornelis Ketel, featuring a central scene of Virtue framed by decorative figures.
This drawing, titled De spiegel der deugd, is a characteristic example of Northern Mannerist draughtsmanship by the Dutch artist Cornelis Ketel. Executed in pen and ink with grey wash and white heightening on blue paper, the work demonstrates the technical precision and stylistic complexity common to the period. The composition is structured as an elaborate frame, typical of designs for prints or title pages, surrounding a central allegorical scene.
At the centre, a female figure representing Virtue is depicted with a lion, a traditional symbol of strength and fortitude. She is flanked by figures that embody the struggle between moral rectitude and vice. The surrounding frame is populated with decorative motifs, including putti and architectural elements, which frame the narrative space. Ketel, who spent time in France and England before settling in Amsterdam, was known for his mastery of the human form and his ability to integrate classical iconography into sophisticated, multi-layered designs.
The use of blue paper provides a mid-tone ground, allowing the artist to create volume through the application of white highlights and dark ink washes. This technique gives the figures a sculptural quality, typical of the late sixteenth-century interest in anatomical clarity and dramatic lighting. The work reflects the intellectual climate of the Dutch Golden Age, where allegorical subjects were frequently employed to convey moral lessons or philosophical concepts. The balance between the central narrative and the ornamental border creates a sense of order, while the figures themselves exhibit the elongated proportions and graceful, twisting poses associated with the Mannerist style. This piece offers a glimpse into the preparatory processes of printmaking and the high level of finish expected in such designs during the late Renaissance.
