A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Reinier Nooms depicting two Dutch merchant ships, showcasing the artist's expert knowledge of naval architecture.
This etching by Reinier Nooms, also known as Zeeman, captures two distinct vessels: the 'De Vergulde Dolfijn' and 'De Kat'. Nooms was a former sailor, and his technical knowledge of naval architecture is evident in the precise rendering of the rigging, masts, and hull structures. The work belongs to a series documenting various types of ships common to the Dutch merchant fleet during the seventeenth century.
The composition is balanced, placing the larger vessel to the left and the smaller ship to the right. Nooms employs a fine, controlled line to define the complex web of ropes and sails, demonstrating his mastery of the etching needle. The water is rendered with short, horizontal strokes that suggest a calm sea, while the sky remains largely unworked to focus the viewer on the structural details of the ships. Small figures are visible on the decks, providing a sense of scale and activity to the scene.
Nooms was highly regarded by his contemporaries for his accurate depictions of maritime subjects. His work was often used as a reference by other artists, including Canaletto, who admired his ability to convey the reality of nautical life. This print offers a clear view of the specific design differences between the 'Straets-Vaerder' and the 'Frans-Vaerder', reflecting the diverse nature of Dutch maritime trade. The lack of excessive atmospheric effects allows the viewer to study the craftsmanship of the vessels themselves, making this an excellent example of the documentary approach to maritime art during the Dutch Golden Age.
