A precise pen and ink drawing by Jan de Beijer, capturing the exterior of the Pieterskerk in Utrecht in 1752.
This drawing by Jan de Beijer depicts the Pieterskerk in Utrecht as it appeared in the mid-eighteenth century. De Beijer was a prolific draughtsman known for his precise documentation of Dutch towns and buildings. His work provides a clear record of urban development and architectural history during the period. The composition focuses on the exterior of the church, capturing the Romanesque features of the structure alongside the surrounding streetscape.
The artist employs a clean, linear style, using ink to define the masonry, window arches, and the verticality of the trees lining the path. The perspective is managed with care, guiding the eye from the foreground church towards the distant tower visible in the background. De Beijer often travelled throughout the Netherlands to produce these topographical studies, which were frequently used as the basis for engravings. This particular work is dated 10 June 1752, a detail inscribed by the artist at the top of the sheet.
The drawing reflects the eighteenth-century interest in local history and the systematic recording of national heritage. By focusing on the specific details of the Pieterskerk, De Beijer preserves the appearance of a site that has undergone various modifications over the centuries. The lack of heavy shading allows the architectural forms to remain the primary subject, offering a view of Utrecht that is both informative and stylistically restrained. This print is suitable for those interested in historical architecture, Dutch art, or the tradition of topographical illustration.
