A detailed mezzotint by Cornelis Dusart depicting a sailor returning from the East Indies, rendered with dramatic tonal contrasts.
Cornelis Dusart, a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade, was a master of the mezzotint technique. This print, titled De Oost-Indiëvaarder, depicts a sailor returning from the East Indies. The figure is shown in a state of disarray, holding a bottle in one hand and a cap in the other, with a clay pipe clenched between his teeth. His posture suggests a man recently returned to land, perhaps celebrating his arrival or succumbing to the effects of long-awaited drink.
In the background, a ship is visible on the horizon, providing context for the sailor's identity. Dusart uses the mezzotint process to create a wide range of tonal values, from the deep, velvety blacks of the shadows to the soft highlights on the sailor's clothing and face. This technique allows for a dramatic play of light that defines the form of the figure against the darker, atmospheric backdrop.
Dusart was known for his interest in the lives of the lower classes, often portraying peasants, tavern scenes, and itinerant workers with a mixture of humour and observation. This work is characteristic of his output, capturing a specific social type common in the maritime culture of the late seventeenth-century Netherlands. The sailor's exaggerated expression and slightly unstable stance are typical of the genre, which often sought to document the rougher edges of society. The print remains a fine example of the technical capabilities of mezzotint during this period, demonstrating how the medium could be used to convey texture and mood with great precision. The composition is balanced, with the sailor occupying the foreground, while the ship serves as a subtle narrative device to explain his presence on the shore.
