A classic Hague School oil painting by Jacob Maris, depicting a Dutch windmill under a dramatic, cloud-filled sky.
Jacob Maris, a central figure of the Hague School, produced this work during a period when Dutch artists returned to the national tradition of atmospheric painting. The composition centres on a robust windmill, a motif that carries significant weight within the history of Dutch art. Maris employs a palette dominated by grey, brown, and muted green tones, capturing the characteristic overcast light of the Netherlands. The sky occupies a large portion of the canvas, filled with heavy, textured clouds that suggest an impending change in weather.
Below the mill, the rooftops of a small town are rendered with loose, expressive brushwork. This technique allows the viewer to perceive the scene through an atmospheric haze, rather than through sharp, clinical detail. The windmill itself is depicted with a sense of structural solidity, its dark silhouette contrasting against the lighter, shifting sky. Small birds are scattered across the upper register, adding a sense of scale and movement to the quiet scene.
Maris was known for his ability to manipulate paint to convey the humidity and light of the Dutch climate. His approach avoids the polished finish of earlier academic styles, favouring instead a tactile application of pigment that gives the surface a physical presence. This work reflects the artist's interest in the interplay between man-made structures and the natural environment. By focusing on the windmill, Maris connects his practice to the seventeenth-century masters while maintaining a distinctly nineteenth-century sensibility. The painting remains a clear example of the Hague School's dedication to capturing the mood of the Dutch countryside through a tonal, rather than purely descriptive, lens.
