A 1971 etching by Dutch artist Dirkje Kuik, depicting a coachman in profile with precise, expressive line work.
Dirkje Kuik, a Dutch artist known for her mastery of printmaking, produced this etching titled De koetsier in 1971. The work depicts a coachman in profile, rendered with a distinctive graphic sensibility that characterises much of her output. Kuik employs a combination of fine, controlled lines and atmospheric shading to build the form of the figure. The coachman wears a wide-brimmed hat, and his features are suggested through economical mark-making, which allows the viewer to perceive the subject without excessive detail.
The composition is focused on the side profile of the man, who holds a whip in his hand. The use of hatching and cross-hatching creates texture within the clothing and the beard, while the background remains largely neutral, allowing the figure to occupy the space with a sense of quiet presence. Kuik often drew inspiration from historical figures and archetypes, reinterpreting them through a modern lens. Her approach to the etching medium is precise, showing a clear understanding of how line weight and plate tone can define a subject.
This print reflects the technical rigour common in Dutch printmaking traditions of the twentieth century. The artist avoids unnecessary ornamentation, preferring to let the strength of the line carry the narrative weight of the image. The figure of the coachman is presented as a study of character, capturing a moment of stillness rather than action. The work is a fine example of Kuik's ability to balance technical control with a sense of individual personality, making it a compelling piece for those interested in mid-century European graphic art.
