A detailed eighteenth-century etching by Carel Frederik Bendorp (I) capturing the architectural form of the Sint Janskerk in Gouda.
This etching by Carel Frederik Bendorp (I) depicts the Sint Janskerk in Gouda, a structure known for its immense length and historic stained glass. Bendorp, a Dutch artist active during the late eighteenth century, specialised in topographical views that documented the urban fabric of the Netherlands. His work provides a clear record of the architectural surroundings of the church as they appeared during his lifetime.
The composition focuses on the exterior of the church, with the tower rising above the surrounding domestic buildings. Bendorp employs precise, controlled lines to define the masonry of the church and the gabled houses in the foreground. The use of cross-hatching creates depth and texture, particularly in the shadows cast by the church tower and the rooflines. Small figures populate the square, providing a sense of scale and daily activity within the urban space. The sky is rendered with light, horizontal strokes, suggesting a clear day.
Technically, the work adheres to the conventions of late eighteenth-century Dutch printmaking. The artist prioritises clarity and accuracy over atmospheric effects. The perspective is handled with a focus on the structural geometry of the buildings, ensuring that the architectural details remain legible. This print is a representative example of the topographical tradition that sought to preserve the appearance of Dutch civic and religious monuments. It offers a glimpse into the historical appearance of Gouda, capturing the relationship between the monumental church and the modest dwellings that defined the town square.
