A 1486 woodcut by Erhard Reuwich depicting Greek figures, originally published in the travelogue 'Peregrinatio in terram sanctam'.
This woodcut, titled De Grieken, originates from the travelogue 'Peregrinatio in terram sanctam', published in Mainz in 1486. Erhard Reuwich, a Dutch artist and printer, accompanied Bernhard von Breydenbach on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. His role was to document the people, costumes, and cities encountered during the journey. This specific print depicts a group of Greek men, identifiable by their distinctive attire and headgear, alongside a solitary figure in a hooded robe.
The composition is characteristic of late fifteenth-century book illustration. Reuwich employs clear, decisive lines to define the folds of the garments and the facial features of the subjects. The figures are arranged in a shallow space, typical of early woodblock printing techniques where the focus remains on the clarity of the subject matter rather than atmospheric depth. The inclusion of Latin inscriptions within the frame serves to identify the figures for the reader, a common practice in early printed travel literature.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precision required for woodcut production during the incunabula period. The cross-hatching and parallel lines provide texture and shadow, giving the figures a sense of weight and presence. As a primary source of visual information from the late medieval period, this print offers a glimpse into how European travellers perceived and recorded foreign cultures. The work remains a significant example of the intersection between early printing technology and the tradition of the illustrated travel diary. It provides a direct connection to the observational practices of the Northern Renaissance, where the artist acted as both reporter and illustrator.
