A detailed 1694 etching by Cornelis van der Sys depicting a goldbeater at work, part of the Menselyk Bedryf series on Dutch trades.
This etching, titled De Goudslaager, is part of the series Menselyk Bedryf (Human Occupations), published in Amsterdam in 1694. The work depicts a goldbeater at his workbench, captured in the act of hammering gold leaf. The scene is rendered with the precise, linear quality characteristic of late seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking. The artist, Cornelis van der Sys, employs a clear, observational style to document the physical labour involved in this traditional craft.
In the foreground, the primary figure sits on a stool, his arm raised with a hammer, focused on the material before him. A second figure is visible to the left, engaged in a related task. Through a window or opening in the background, a secondary scene shows two figures interacting, providing a sense of depth and context to the workshop environment. A small dog rests on the floor, adding a touch of domestic realism to the industrial setting. The composition is framed by text, which includes the title and a moralising verse in Dutch, a common feature in prints of this period that sought to link professional life with philosophical or religious reflection.
Van der Sys uses hatching and cross-hatching to define the forms and suggest the play of light within the interior. The print is a document of the artisanal practices of the era, offering a glimpse into the specialised trades that supported the Dutch economy. The inclusion of the verse beneath the image suggests that the print was intended for a literate audience, likely serving as both a record of contemporary industry and a prompt for contemplation on the nature of material wealth and human vanity. The work remains a clear example of the didactic nature of Dutch genre prints, where the depiction of labour is frequently paired with commentary on the human condition.
