Max Pechstein (1881-1955) was a German Expressionist painter and printmaker. A member of the group Die Brücke, Pechstein is known for his bold colours and simplified forms, often depicting nudes and scenes from nature. His work reflects the influence of Fauvism and other early modern movements. He was later ostracised by the Nazi regime. 'Dawn', painted in 1911, exemplifies Pechstein's Expressionist style. The painting depicts a reclining nude figure set against a backdrop of stylised trees and a yellow sky. The figure is rendered in a striking turquoise hue, with bold outlines and simplified forms. The composition is divided into distinct colour blocks, creating a sense of flatness and abstraction.
