A detailed eighteenth-century etching by Jacob Folkema depicting the biblical encounter between David and Saul in the wilderness of Engedi.
This etching by the Dutch engraver Jacob Folkema depicts a narrative moment from the First Book of Samuel. The scene captures the encounter in the wilderness of Engedi, where David reveals to King Saul that he had the opportunity to kill him but chose mercy instead. David holds the severed piece of Saul's robe, a physical proof of his proximity and restraint. Folkema employs a classical approach to the figures, dressing both men in stylised armour reminiscent of Roman military attire, a common convention in eighteenth-century biblical illustration.
The composition is divided by the natural environment, with Saul standing on an elevated position on the left, surrounded by his soldiers, while David emerges from the shadows of a rocky outcrop on the right. The use of cross-hatching and varied line weights creates a sense of depth within the wooded setting. The foreground features a small stream, adding a tactile quality to the terrain. The inclusion of text at the base, referencing the biblical source in both Dutch and French, suggests this work was intended for a printed series or a larger volume of religious narratives.
Folkema, active in Amsterdam, was known for his technical precision in copperplate engraving. His work often reflects the influence of the Dutch Golden Age tradition, adapted for the more refined, decorative tastes of the mid-eighteenth century. The figures are rendered with clear anatomical focus, and the dramatic tension of the biblical narrative is conveyed through their gestures and the contrast between the light-filled clearing and the darker, sheltered area where David stands. This print offers a clear example of how historical narratives were visualised for a contemporary audience, balancing theological themes with the aesthetic sensibilities of the period.
