A sixteenth-century woodcut depicting King David issuing a command to Uriah the Hittite, rendered in a precise, linear style.
This woodcut by Veit Rudolf Specklin depicts a narrative moment from the Old Testament: King David commanding Uriah the Hittite. The composition focuses on the interaction between the two figures, with David seated upon an ornate throne, gesturing with his sceptre towards the soldier. Uriah stands before him, dressed in contemporary sixteenth-century military attire, including a plumed helmet and a sword at his hip. The artist employs a clear, linear style characteristic of German woodcut production during the mid-sixteenth century.
Specklin, a draughtsman and woodcutter active in Strasbourg, demonstrates a precise approach to form. The lines define the contours of the figures and the textures of the clothing, from the folds of the King's robes to the rigid plates of the soldier's armour. The background remains minimal, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the exchange between the monarch and his subordinate. This work reflects the period's interest in biblical illustration, often produced for printed books or as standalone devotional sheets. The stark contrast between the seated, authoritative King and the standing, attentive soldier creates a balanced visual tension. The print captures the narrative economy typical of the era, where gesture and posture communicate the weight of the biblical account without the need for elaborate environmental detail. As a piece of graphic art, it provides insight into the technical capabilities of woodblock printing in the Renaissance, where the artist had to translate complex human interactions into a series of deliberate, carved marks.
