A sixteenth-century woodcut depicting the biblical battle between David and Goliath, rendered with the precise line work characteristic of German Renaissance printmaking.
This woodcut by Veit Rudolf Specklin depicts the biblical encounter between David and Goliath. The composition follows the conventions of sixteenth-century German printmaking, where narrative clarity takes precedence over naturalistic perspective. Goliath, rendered as a towering figure in contemporary plate armour, dominates the foreground. His size relative to the surrounding soldiers emphasises his physical threat. David is shown in a dynamic pose, mid-action, as he prepares to release his sling.
The background features a military encampment with tents and soldiers, providing a sense of the broader conflict. Specklin uses clear, decisive lines to define the forms, a characteristic technique for woodcuts intended for book illustration or broadsheets. The hatching patterns create texture on the armour and the uneven terrain, while the sky is marked by simple radiating lines that suggest a divine or dramatic presence.
Specklin, a native of Strasbourg, was active as both an architect and a printmaker. His work often reflects the technical precision required for architectural drawing, which translates here into the structured, orderly arrangement of the figures. The print captures the tension of the moment before the decisive blow, focusing on the contrast between the heavily armoured giant and the agile, lightly clad youth. This piece offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the Reformation era, where biblical stories were frequently reproduced to educate and engage a wider audience. The stark black and white contrast inherent in the woodcut medium ensures that the figures remain legible even at a small scale, making it a fine example of the period's graphic output.
