A moody, atmospheric etching by Levon West depicting a solitary figure in a Venetian-style doorway at water level.
Levon West, also known by his pseudonym Ivan Dmitri, was a prolific American printmaker and photographer. This etching demonstrates his mastery of the medium, particularly his ability to manipulate light and shadow to create atmospheric tension. The composition focuses on a narrow, gothic-arched entrance situated directly at the water level, a common motif in depictions of Venice during the early twentieth century.
The artist employs a high-contrast technique, using deep, velvety blacks to define the recessed doorway and the surrounding masonry. This darkness contrasts with the illuminated stone facade, which catches the light and reveals the texture of the building. A solitary figure stands within the threshold, providing a sense of scale and narrative mystery to the scene. The reflection of the architecture in the water below is rendered with fluid, horizontal strokes, suggesting the gentle movement of the canal.
West was part of the American Etching Revival, a period when artists sought to elevate the status of the print as a fine art form. His work often explored the interplay between structural geometry and the organic qualities of light. By limiting his palette to monochromatic tones, he directs the viewer's attention to the precision of his line work and the depth of his tonal range. The print captures a quiet, contemplative moment, typical of his interest in urban architecture and the human presence within it. This piece remains a representative example of his technical skill in copperplate printing, showcasing his ability to translate the complex textures of stone and water into a graphic format.
