A moody, expressive portrait of the painter Dario de Regoyos, captured by his friend Théo van Rysselberghe in 1885.
This portrait depicts the Spanish painter Dario de Regoyos in a moment of musical absorption. Painted in 1885, the work captures the subject seated in a chair, his head tilted back with eyes closed as he plays the guitar. The composition relies on a dark, moody palette, with deep browns and blacks dominating the background and the subject's attire. This choice of tone creates a sense of intimacy, drawing the viewer into the private atmosphere of the scene.
Van Rysselberghe employs a loose, expressive brushwork that contrasts with the later pointillist techniques for which he became known. The paint application is thick and tactile, particularly in the rendering of the hands and the guitar. The background features faint, inscribed text, which adds a layer of narrative complexity to the piece. This inclusion of script suggests a personal connection between the artist and the sitter, hinting at the shared intellectual and artistic circles they inhabited during their time in Brussels.
Regoyos, a close friend of the artist, is portrayed not merely as a subject, but as a participant in a creative act. The lighting is focused, illuminating the face and the instrument while allowing the rest of the figure to recede into the shadows. This treatment of light and shadow provides a sense of volume and presence. The work reflects the influence of Spanish masters like Velázquez and Goya, whose dark, dramatic styles were studied by many artists of the period. By capturing this fleeting expression of concentration, Van Rysselberghe provides a glimpse into the bohemian life of the late nineteenth-century European art scene.
