A refined woodcut illustration by Aristide Maillol, depicting a scene from the pastoral romance Daphnis and Chloe with clean, minimalist lines.
This woodcut by Aristide Maillol depicts a scene from the ancient Greek pastoral romance, Daphnis and Chloe. The composition features the two titular characters in a quiet, intimate moment. Maillol employs a reductive approach, using clean, bold lines to define the figures and the surrounding foliage. The lack of shading or complex perspective creates a flat, graphic quality that aligns with the aesthetic of early twentieth-century book illustration.
Maillol, primarily known for his sculpture, approached his graphic work with a similar focus on form and volume. Even within the two-dimensional constraints of a woodcut, the figures possess a sense of weight and physical presence. The interaction between the two characters is rendered with economy, focusing on the gesture of the apple placement rather than decorative detail. The background is suggested through simplified leaf patterns, which provide a sense of place without distracting from the central figures.
This print was produced for the edition of Longus's Daphnis and Chloe published by Henri Creuzevault. Maillol's illustrations for this text are recognised for their harmony with the printed page, reflecting his interest in the relationship between typography and image. The work demonstrates his ability to distil complex narrative moments into essential visual components. The stark contrast between the black ink and the paper surface emphasises the clarity of his draughtsmanship. This piece offers a view into the artist's graphic practice, which remained consistent with his sculptural philosophy of simplification and classical restraint.
