A refined woodcut by Aristide Maillol, depicting the protagonists of the ancient Greek romance Daphnis and Chloe through simplified, sculptural lines.
This woodcut by Aristide Maillol originates from his extensive illustration project for the ancient Greek pastoral romance, Daphnis and Chloe, written by Longus. Commissioned by the publisher Henri Kahnweiler, Maillol produced a series of woodcuts that reflect his classical sensibilities and his preference for simplified, sculptural forms. The work depicts the two protagonists in a moment of movement, their figures captured with clean, decisive lines that strip away unnecessary detail to focus on the essential rhythm of their interaction.
Maillol, primarily known as a sculptor, applied his understanding of volume and mass to the two-dimensional medium of the woodcut. The figures are defined by clear outlines against a dark, textured background, creating a stark contrast that emphasises their silhouettes. The composition avoids complex perspective, opting instead for a flat, frieze-like arrangement that recalls the aesthetic of ancient Greek vase painting. This stylistic choice aligns with the artist's broader interest in Mediterranean antiquity, which informed much of his creative output throughout his career.
In this specific print, the interaction between the two figures is rendered with a sense of balance and restraint. The lines are deliberate, avoiding excessive ornamentation to maintain a focus on the human form. The woodcut technique itself, with its characteristic rough edges and directness, complements the rustic nature of the source material. By distilling the narrative to its most basic visual components, Maillol creates an image that is both immediate and timeless. This print is a representative example of his graphic work, demonstrating how he translated the tactile qualities of his sculpture into the medium of printmaking, providing a visual accompaniment that respects the simplicity of the original text.
