A refined woodcut illustration by Aristide Maillol, created for the 1937 edition of the pastoral romance Daphnis and Chloe.
This woodcut by Aristide Maillol belongs to his extensive series created for the 1937 edition of Longus's ancient Greek pastoral romance, Daphnis and Chloe. Maillol, primarily known for his sculpture, approached these illustrations with a focus on simplified form and classical restraint. The composition depicts the moment Daphnis observes the sleeping Chloe, a scene rendered with minimal lines that prioritise clarity over anatomical detail.
The artist employs a stark, monochromatic aesthetic. The figures are defined by clean, continuous outlines, while the surrounding space remains largely unadorned. This approach reflects Maillol's interest in the aesthetic principles of antiquity, where the focus remains on the essential gesture and the relationship between the two figures. The heavy black border surrounding the image provides a grounding frame, typical of his graphic work for the publisher Henri Creuzevault.
Maillol's woodcuts for this project demonstrate his ability to translate the tactile nature of his sculptural practice into a two-dimensional medium. By stripping away unnecessary detail, he achieves a sense of timelessness. The figures possess a quiet, static quality, echoing the stillness of the pastoral setting described in the original text. This print offers a clear example of the artist's graphic style, which avoids ornamentation in favour of structural integrity and rhythmic line work. It is a piece that speaks to the intersection of classical literature and early twentieth-century printmaking, capturing a moment of intimacy through a disciplined, reductive visual language.
