A detailed 1555 engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever depicting the biblical trial of the elders, showcasing the technical precision of the German Renaissance.
This engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever, dated 1555, depicts the biblical narrative of Daniel judging the elders who falsely accused Susanna. As one of the 'Little Masters' of German printmaking, Aldegrever demonstrates a mastery of the burin, employing precise, rhythmic hatching to define form and shadow within the architectural setting. The composition is structured around the central figure of Daniel, who sits in judgment, his gesture directing the viewer's eye toward the accused elders standing to the right.
Susanna is positioned between the accusers and the judge, her posture conveying a sense of quiet composure amidst the legal proceedings. The background features a vaulted archway and a circular window, elements that provide depth to the scene while maintaining the characteristic clarity of sixteenth-century Northern European printmaking. Aldegrever incorporates classical architectural motifs, such as the fluted column, which reflect the influence of Italian Renaissance art on German artists of the period. The figures are rendered with anatomical attention, their drapery folds articulated through fine, parallel lines that suggest volume and texture.
This work is representative of the artist's late period, showing a high degree of technical control. The scene is contained within a defined space, yet the use of light and shadow creates a sense of atmospheric perspective. The artist's monogram, 'AG', is visible in the lower left corner, a hallmark of his output. This print offers a clear view into the narrative traditions of the Reformation era, where biblical stories were frequently adapted into visual media for both devotional and educational purposes. The balance between the dramatic tension of the trial and the orderly arrangement of the figures creates a compelling visual record of this Old Testament account.
