A group of figures in flowing garments dance in a circle on a hillside, captured in this 1910 oil painting by the German Symbolist Franz von Stuck.
Franz von Stuck, a founding member of the Munich Secession, produced this work in 1910. The composition depicts a group of female figures engaged in a circular dance upon a grassy hill. Their movement creates a rhythmic, flowing motion that contrasts with the static, vertical forms of the trees framing the scene. The figures are dressed in simple, draped garments that catch the light, suggesting a classical or mythological inspiration common in the artist's oeuvre.
The background features a sweeping view of a valley under a vast, cloud-filled sky. The brushwork is visible and directional, particularly in the rendering of the grass and the atmospheric clouds, which gives the surface a tactile quality. A discarded red cloth rests in the lower right corner, providing a sharp colour contrast to the cool greens and blues that dominate the rest of the canvas. This detail introduces a sense of human presence and immediacy to the otherwise ethereal setting.
Stuck was known for his interest in the synthesis of the arts and his ability to blend classical themes with a modern, decorative sensibility. In this painting, the figures do not interact with the viewer but remain locked in their own private, rhythmic activity. The work avoids the darker, more ominous themes often associated with the artist's earlier Symbolist output, opting instead for a lighter, more pastoral mood. The square format of the canvas reinforces the balanced, almost ritualistic nature of the dance. It is a clear example of the artist's technical control and his preference for staged, theatrical compositions that evoke a sense of timelessness.
