A bold, post-impressionist study of Italian architecture by Ilya Mashkov, featuring strong geometric forms and a bright, Mediterranean-inspired palette.
Ilya Mashkov, a founding member of the Jack of Diamonds group, produced this work during his travels in Italy. The painting reflects the influence of Paul Cézanne, which was a primary force in the development of early twentieth-century Russian avant-garde art. Mashkov employs a structured approach to form, using bold, deliberate brushwork to define the architectural elements of the cathedral and the verticality of the cypress trees. The composition relies on a flattened perspective, where the stone walls and the striped facade of the structure are rendered through planes of colour rather than traditional linear depth. The palette is bright, capturing the Mediterranean light through a combination of warm ochres, cool blues, and deep greens. The cypress trees act as vertical anchors, contrasting with the horizontal lines of the steps and the arched openings of the building. Mashkov was known for his interest in the materiality of paint. In this piece, the application is thick and tactile, allowing the texture of the canvas to contribute to the overall visual effect. The work avoids the soft blending typical of earlier academic traditions, opting instead for a more robust, constructionist method of painting. By focusing on the geometric essence of the scene, Mashkov captures the atmosphere of the Italian setting while maintaining a clear, analytical distance from his subject matter. This piece represents a period in the artist's career when he was actively synthesising European modernism with his own distinct, energetic approach to colour and form.
