A woodblock print by Onishi Chinnen from 1836, depicting a boatman in Edo with minimalist ink lines and subtle colour.
This woodblock print originates from the illustrated book 'Azuma no teburi' (Customs of the Eastern Capital), published in 1836. Onishi Chinnen, a painter and printmaker active in the late Edo period, demonstrates his mastery of the brush through this depiction of a boatman at work. The composition focuses on the economy of line, a hallmark of the Shijo school style which Chinnen adopted.
The image captures a solitary figure navigating a small vessel. The artist employs minimal colour, relying instead on the strength of the ink lines to define the form of the boat, the ripples of the water, and the posture of the rower. The conical hat, a common accessory for labourers of the era, is rendered with precise, rhythmic strokes. The water is suggested through simple, undulating lines that convey movement without the need for excessive detail.
Chinnen was known for his ability to observe daily life with clarity. This work avoids the theatricality often found in contemporary ukiyo-e, opting for a more grounded, observational approach. The print reflects the aesthetic values of the period, where the beauty of a scene is found in its simplicity and the directness of the artist's hand. The paper texture and the subtle application of pigment suggest the quality of the original woodblock printing process, which prioritised the integrity of the initial sketch. This piece offers a view into the maritime culture of Edo, where small boats were essential for transport and trade along the city's canals and rivers. It remains a clear example of the graphic traditions that defined Japanese print culture during the nineteenth century.
