A 1894 oil painting by T. C. Steele, depicting a rural farmstead scene set against the backdrop of the Cumberland Mountains.
Theodore Clement Steele, a central figure of the Hoosier Group, produced this work in 1894. The painting captures a rural scene with a focus on the interplay of light across a pastoral setting. Steele employs a technique characterised by broken brushwork, a hallmark of the Impressionist influence he encountered during his studies in Munich. The composition draws the eye along a dirt path, leading from the foreground figures towards the rolling elevations of the Cumberland Mountains in the distance.
In the foreground, a woman and a child stand near a white horse, surrounded by free-roaming poultry. The architecture consists of modest timber structures, typical of the period and region, which sit comfortably within the greenery. The sky is rendered with thick, directional strokes of white and blue, suggesting a breezy day with shifting cloud cover. Steele balances the domestic elements of the farmstead with the expansive, atmospheric quality of the mountain range.
This piece demonstrates the artist's interest in the specific light conditions of the American Midwest. Rather than seeking idealised forms, Steele records the textures of the earth, the weathered wood of the buildings, and the soft foliage of the trees. The palette remains grounded in natural tones, with greens, browns, and muted ochres providing the base, while the blue of the sky introduces a cooler contrast. The work provides a clear view of late nineteenth-century rural life, documented through a lens that prioritises the immediate visual experience of the environment over rigid academic structure.
