A fine etching by Nicolaes Berchem the Elder depicting a pastoral scene of travellers and their livestock crossing a stream.
Nicolaes Berchem the Elder was a prominent figure in the Dutch Golden Age, known for his ability to blend Italianate light with the rustic subject matter of the Northern tradition. This etching, Crossing the Brook, captures a quiet moment of rural life. A man and a woman are depicted with their livestock, navigating a shallow stream. The composition is balanced, with the figures and animals arranged to guide the eye across the water and towards the distant, hazy hills.
Berchem employs a delicate etching technique, using fine lines to define the textures of the animals' coats, the fabric of the figures' clothing, and the ripples on the water surface. The man, seated on a horse, appears to be reading or consulting a document, while the woman sits atop a donkey, her posture relaxed. A dog plays in the foreground, adding a sense of movement to the otherwise tranquil scene. In the background, another figure leads a pack animal, suggesting a wider journey through the countryside.
This work reflects the popular seventeenth-century interest in pastoral themes, which offered urban audiences an idealised view of rural existence. Berchem spent time in Italy, and the influence of that experience is visible in the soft, atmospheric treatment of the background and the classical arrangement of the figures. The print demonstrates his technical skill in creating depth and volume through hatching and cross-hatching. It is a fine example of the printmaking tradition that flourished in the Netherlands during this period, where artists sought to capture both the mundane and the picturesque aspects of daily life. The clarity of the line work ensures that even the smallest details, such as the expressions of the animals and the subtle variations in the terrain, remain distinct and engaging for the viewer.
