Description
Cross Fell follows a pale road through open upland, past rough stone walls and scattered boulders towards a broad summit under a cloud-filled blue sky.
A narrow grey road curves out of the foreground and climbs steadily through open grassland towards the high ridge. Pale lane markings lead between loose limestone boulders and a low dry-stone wall. The mountain fills the distance in broad blue-grey planes, with sunlit strips tracing its slopes and shallow gullies. Above it, large cream clouds drift through a clear blue field, giving the scene an airy, expansive scale.
Cross Fell turns the route through high ground into the subject, rather than treating the fell as a distant silhouette. The road provides a clear line into the scene for those who know the long ascent, while the changing light keeps attention on the contours of the fell.
