Description
Criffel gives a warm, elevated outlook to a restful space, celebrating the freedom of southern Scottish hill country and the pleasure of seeing the Solway spread out below.
The rough stone wall starts close to the viewer and bends towards a rounded shoulder. Golden grass is interrupted by purple-brown patches, with smaller boulders scattered beside the boundary. Beyond the hill, neat fields meet broad silver-lilac water beneath a distant serrated ridge.
From Criffel near New Abbey, the Solway and the land towards Cumbria give the summit view its reach. Yet the wall keeps a tangible foothold in the immediate hillside. If you like wide panoramas with something close enough to touch, this pairing has particular appeal. The evening warmth makes the height feel welcoming, not severe, in a quiet corner at home.
