This work is part of 'Der Krieg' (The War), a cycle of fifty etchings produced by Otto Dix in 1924. Drawing upon his personal experience as a machine gunner during the First World War, Dix documents the physical destruction of the French countryside. The image depicts the terrain near Dontrien, a site transformed into a desolate expanse of shell craters and churned earth.

Dix employs the technical capabilities of etching and aquatint to capture the stark contrast between the pitch-black sky and the harsh, artificial illumination of flares.
