A woodblock print by Hiroshige, depicting a courtesan viewing travellers through a circular window. The contrast between the interior and exterior scenes creates a sense of contemplation.
This woodblock print by Hiroshige (1797-1858), a master of the Ukiyo-e style, depicts a courtesan in an interior setting, observing a scene of travellers through a circular window or mirror. The composition is divided into two distinct spaces: the intimate, patterned world of the courtesan, and the distant, active world outside. The courtesan is adorned in a patterned kimono, seated on cushions, and her gaze is directed towards the circular inset. This inset shows figures hurrying along a shore, perhaps porters carrying a palanquin, with birds flying overhead. The contrast between the static figure and the dynamic scene creates a sense of longing or contemplation. Hiroshige was a prolific artist, best known for his series of prints depicting landscapes and scenes of everyday life in Japan. His work often captures the transient beauty of nature and the changing seasons, and his innovative use of perspective and colour had a significant influence on Western art.
