This woodblock print by Ishikawa Toyonobu depicts a courtesan in a moment of quiet reflection. The figure occupies the foreground, her body angled slightly to create a sense of movement within the vertical composition. She wears a kimono adorned with a floral pattern, the folds of which are rendered with precise, controlled lines. Her hair is styled in a traditional fashion, secured with simple pins, and her expression remains neutral, typical of the period's aesthetic conventions.
The background consists of a barred window, a structural element that provides a geometric contrast to the organic curves of the figure. The use of space is deliberate, with the grid of the window frame creating a rhythmic pattern that draws the eye across the surface of the print. Toyonobu, a master of the benizuri-e technique, employs a limited palette of soft colours. These muted tones, applied with restraint, allow the focus to remain on the silhouette and the subtle variations in the line work.
Ishikawa Toyonobu was a significant figure in the development of the Ukiyo-e genre during the mid-eighteenth century.
