A refined ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shuntei, depicting a courtesan and her attendants as the deity Hotei, produced for the Hanagasa Poetry Club.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shuntei depicts a scene from the series Representations of the 7 Lucky Gods, commissioned by the Hanagasa Poetry Club. The composition features a high-ranking courtesan accompanied by two young attendants, known as kamuro, who together embody the attributes of Hotei, the deity of contentment and abundance. The figures are arranged in a domestic interior, with the courtesan holding a fan and a cup, while the attendants interact with a small vessel.
Shuntei, a student of Katsukawa Shun'ei, was known for his contributions to the ukiyo-e tradition, particularly in his depictions of actors and beautiful women. The print demonstrates the characteristic aesthetic of the period, employing a balanced use of line and colour to define the elaborate patterns of the kimonos and the subtle expressions of the subjects. The inclusion of calligraphic text in the upper portion of the print provides context regarding the poetry club's involvement, linking the visual imagery to the literary pursuits of the Edo period.
The print utilises a muted palette, typical of early nineteenth-century woodblock production, where organic pigments have softened over time. The geometric patterns on the garments provide a contrast to the more fluid lines of the figures' faces and hair. This work offers a glimpse into the intersection of popular culture, religious iconography, and the refined world of the Yoshiwara district, where such prints were frequently circulated among enthusiasts of poetry and art.
