A refined Mughal miniature portrait of a court lady playing the vina, rendered in opaque watercolour and gold on paper.
This work by Muhammad Rizavi Hindi, an artist active in the mid-eighteenth century, captures a court lady in profile. She holds a vina, a traditional stringed instrument, while her posture suggests a moment of musical performance. The composition is framed within an oval, a common device in Mughal miniature painting that draws the eye directly to the subject.
The lady wears a translucent purple garment adorned with gold patterns, draped over her shoulders. Her jewellery, consisting of multiple strands of pearls and a prominent ruby pendant, reflects the material culture of the Mughal court. The artist employs fine brushwork to delineate her features, particularly the profile of her face and the delicate placement of her hands upon the instrument. The background is a muted, dark grey tone, which provides contrast to the lighter skin tones and the decorative elements of her attire.
Such paintings were often produced for albums, intended for private viewing by patrons. The focus remains on the grace of the figure and the technical skill required to render the textures of fabric and jewellery. The use of gold leaf adds a subtle luminosity to the borders and the lady's ornaments, typical of the period's aesthetic. This piece offers a glimpse into the artistic conventions of the mid-1700s, where portraiture served to document the elegance and refinement associated with courtly life. The work remains a clear example of the precision and stylistic restraint characteristic of the later Mughal tradition.
