A 19th-century photolithographic reproduction of a 15th-century engraving by Israhel van Meckenem, depicting a couple seated on a bed.
This print is a 19th-century photolithographic reproduction by the Brussels-based firm Simonau & Toovey. It replicates an original engraving by the German master Israhel van Meckenem, who was active in the late 15th century. The original work, often titled 'The Lovers', depicts a man and a woman seated together on a bed, a common subject in late medieval and early Renaissance printmaking. The composition is framed by a canopy and curtains, creating a domestic interior that reflects the fashions and social customs of the period.
Simonau & Toovey were known for their technical precision in documenting historical artworks. This specific print captures the fine hatching and cross-hatching techniques characteristic of van Meckenem's original copperplate engraving. The figures are rendered with attention to the texture of their garments, from the man's feathered hat to the woman's head covering. The initials 'I.M.' appear at the base of the original composition, a signature mark of van Meckenem.
By the mid-19th century, firms like Simonau & Toovey provided scholars and collectors with access to rare historical prints through high-quality photographic reproduction processes. This print serves as a record of the original engraving, preserving the visual information of the 15th-century work while demonstrating the printing capabilities of the Victorian era. The surrounding paper shows the characteristic ageing and foxing associated with 19th-century archival materials, providing a sense of its own historical context within a larger portfolio or catalogue. The composition remains balanced, focusing on the interaction between the two figures, while the surrounding space is kept minimal to draw the eye to the central narrative.
