A refined woodblock print by Teisai Hokuba, depicting a woman and child beneath a flowering plum tree, featuring elegant calligraphy and soft tones.
Teisai Hokuba, a pupil of Katsushika Hokusai, produced this woodblock print during the Edo period. The composition depicts a domestic scene featuring a woman and a child, positioned beneath the boughs of a flowering plum tree. The artist employs a delicate line quality, characteristic of the surimono style, which often involved private commissions for poetry circles. The inclusion of calligraphy on the left side of the print integrates the visual image with literary expression, a common practice in Japanese printmaking of this era.
The figures are rendered with a focus on the patterns of their garments and their relaxed postures. The woman seated on the ground holds the child, while a second figure rests on a rock formation to the right. The plum blossoms provide a seasonal context, suggesting the arrival of spring. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft earth tones and subtle washes to define the forms against the pale paper background. This print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, where the registration of multiple colour blocks allows for the fine detail seen in the floral branches and the textile motifs.
Hokuba was known for his ability to capture the grace of his subjects while maintaining the stylistic conventions of the Ukiyo-e school. Unlike the more commercial prints produced for the mass market, this work reflects the refined aesthetic preferences of the literati. The spatial arrangement is relatively flat, prioritising the decorative quality of the scene over the creation of deep perspective. The interaction between the figures and the natural elements creates a sense of quiet observation, typical of the bijin-ga genre. This print offers a view into the cultural life of early nineteenth-century Japan, where art, poetry, and nature were closely linked in the daily experience of the urban elite.
