Franz Xaver Winterhalter, a German painter who achieved international success as a portraitist for European royalty and aristocracy, completed this work in 1859. The subject is Maria Ivanovna Beck, Countess Alexander Nikolaevitch Lamsdorff. Winterhalter was known for his ability to capture the textures of fine fabrics and the refined demeanour of his sitters, skills clearly visible in this composition.
The Countess is depicted in a seated pose, set against a backdrop of foliage that suggests an outdoor garden setting. Her attire consists of a voluminous white silk dress, accented with purple trim and delicate lace detailing at the collar. She holds a small book in her lap, a common motif in nineteenth-century portraiture intended to convey the intellectual interests of the sitter. The contrast between the sheen of the silk and the soft, painterly treatment of the surrounding trees demonstrates Winterhalter's technical precision.
Winterhalter's approach to portraiture often involved a balance between formal presentation and a sense of individual character. By placing the Countess in a relaxed, natural environment, he softens the rigidity typically associated with aristocratic portraiture of the period.
