A detailed etching by Bartolomeo Pinelli depicting the traditional dress and daily activities of women in the Roman countryside near Tivoli.
Bartolomeo Pinelli was a prolific Roman artist known for his documentation of the daily lives and traditional dress of the Italian populace. This etching, part of his series on regional costumes, captures a quiet moment in the vicinity of Tivoli. The composition features a mother carrying a child and a water vessel upon her head, accompanied by a young girl, while another woman kneels to gather water from a stream. In the background, additional figures traverse the path, providing a sense of the routine activities common to the region during the early nineteenth century.
Pinelli employed a clear, linear style characteristic of his graphic work. His technique relies on precise hatching to define form and shadow, avoiding excessive tonal variation to maintain a focus on the figures and their attire. The artist possessed a keen eye for the specific details of local dress, which he recorded with ethnographic interest. His work often appealed to travellers on the Grand Tour, who sought authentic representations of Italian life to take home as souvenirs. By documenting these scenes, Pinelli preserved a visual record of customs that were already beginning to change.
This print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance narrative elements with a structured, classical approach to composition. The figures are arranged to guide the viewer across the scene, from the foreground activity to the distant figures on the hillside. The etching process allows for a crispness of line that brings clarity to the textures of the clothing and the surrounding terrain. As a piece of historical documentation, it offers a window into the social fabric of the Roman countryside, presented with the technical rigour that defined Pinelli's career as an illustrator and printmaker.
