El Greco's 'Coronation of the Virgin' (1603-1605) depicts the Virgin Mary being crowned by the Holy Trinity. This oil on canvas painting showcases the artist's signature elongated figures and dramatic use of colour, typical of the Mannerist style.
Painted between 1603 and 1605, El Greco's 'Coronation of the Virgin' is a work of the late Spanish Renaissance. Born in Crete, Doménikos Theotokópoulos, known as El Greco, developed a distinctive style characterised by elongated figures and dramatic use of colour. This painting was commissioned for the main altarpiece of the Church of San Nicolás de Bari in Madrid. The composition is divided into two distinct zones. Below, the apostles gather around the Virgin's empty tomb, their gazes directed upwards. Above, the Virgin Mary is crowned by the Holy Trinity, surrounded by angels in a celestial realm. El Greco's signature elongated figures are evident, as is his use of light and shadow to create a sense of drama and spiritual intensity. The swirling clouds and dynamic poses contribute to the painting's emotional power.
