A formal portrait of Dutch naval officer Cornelis Evertsen, featuring the subject in polished armour against a backdrop of a naval engagement.
This portrait by Nicolaes Maes depicts Cornelis Evertsen the Younger, a prominent Dutch naval officer. Maes, a pupil of Rembrandt, transitioned from genre scenes to the more lucrative field of portraiture during the latter half of his career. This work reflects the shift in Dutch taste towards the elegant, French-influenced style that dominated the late seventeenth century.
Evertsen is shown in three-quarter length, wearing polished steel armour that catches the light. A bright orange sash, a symbol of his allegiance to the House of Orange, provides a sharp contrast to the dark metal. His long, flowing wig is characteristic of the fashion of the period. He rests one hand on a baton, a traditional attribute of military command, while the other rests on his hip. In the background, a naval battle unfolds, with smoke and fire rising from ships, which serves to identify the sitter's profession and his active service in the Dutch navy.
Maes employs a controlled palette, focusing on the interplay between the dark, atmospheric background and the reflective surfaces of the armour. The brushwork is precise, capturing the texture of the metal and the soft fabric of the sash. The composition follows the conventions of aristocratic portraiture, placing the subject in a position of authority. The inclusion of the naval engagement behind him provides narrative context, linking the individual to the broader history of Dutch maritime power. This print captures the technical skill of Maes, who successfully balanced the requirements of formal portraiture with the dramatic elements of his earlier training. The result is a study of status and military identity, rendered with the clarity and attention to detail that defined the artist's later output.
