Jean-Honoré Fragonard's 'Coresus Sacrificing Himself to Save Callirhoe' depicts a dramatic scene from Roman mythology, showcasing the artist's skill in history painting.
Jean-Honoré Fragonard's 1765 painting, 'Coresus Sacrificing Himself to Save Callirhoe', depicts a scene from Roman mythology. The high priest Coresus offers himself as a sacrifice to save Callirhoe, who lies unconscious on an altar. This dramatic moment is set within a classical temple, complete with towering columns and a gathering crowd of onlookers. Above, angels swirl in the heavens, observing the unfolding events. The composition is theatrical, with strong diagonals and dynamic movement. Fragonard, a French Rococo painter, is known for his light-hearted genre scenes and decorative works. However, 'Coresus Sacrificing Himself to Save Callirhoe' represents a departure from his typical style. It was his submission to the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, intended to establish his reputation as a history painter. The painting demonstrates Fragonard's ability to handle complex narratives and large-scale compositions, while retaining his characteristic painterly touch. The work is now held at the Musée du Louvre, Paris.
