A seventeenth-century etching by Simon Guillain, depicting a street cook in motion, based on a design by Annibale Carracci.
This etching, titled 'Cook!', is plate 16 from a series of prints by Simon Guillain. The work is based on designs by Annibale Carracci, as indicated by the inscription 'An. Car. In.' in the lower right corner. Guillain, a French sculptor and printmaker, produced these images to document the street vendors and tradespeople of seventeenth-century Bologna.
The composition features a male cook in profile, walking while balancing a large platter of prepared food. His posture is functional, reflecting the daily labour of a working-class individual. The artist employs a clear, linear style, using hatching and cross-hatching to define the folds of the cook's tunic and the contours of his legs. The background is minimal, providing just enough context to suggest an urban setting without distracting from the primary figure.
Guillain's work belongs to a tradition of 'cris de Paris' or street cry prints, which were popular across Europe during the Baroque period. These series served as visual records of social hierarchies and urban life. By focusing on the mundane activities of a cook, the print offers a glimpse into the social fabric of the era. The etching technique allows for a sense of immediacy, capturing the movement of the figure with precision. The simplicity of the lines and the directness of the subject matter make this a compelling example of seventeenth-century graphic art. It remains a valuable historical document for those interested in the social history of the period and the development of printmaking techniques in France and Italy.
