A classic example of neoplasticism by Piet Mondrian, 'Composition with Blue' features a grid of black lines and white rectangles, punctuated by a single blue form. This abstract composition embodies Mondrian's pursuit of a universal visual language.
Piet Mondrian, a Dutch artist (1872-1944), is celebrated as one of the pioneers of abstract art. He developed a non-representational form he called neoplasticism. This style consisted of white ground, upon which he painted a grid of vertical and horizontal black lines and the primary colours. Mondrian believed that this simplified approach could express dynamic relationships in a way that reflected the modern experience. He sought to create a universal visual language, free from the subjective emotions and individual experiences tied to representational art. 'Composition with Blue' exemplifies Mondrian's mature style. The painting features a grid of thick black lines, creating a series of rectangles and squares. Most of these are white, but one is filled with a solid, bright blue. The composition is carefully balanced, with the placement of the blue rectangle adding a focal point. The overall effect is one of harmony and order, reflecting Mondrian's desire to create a visual representation of universal principles.
