A meditative abstract work by Alexei von Jawlensky, featuring simplified geometric forms and a restrained palette to suggest a spiritual presence.
Alexei von Jawlensky, a Russian painter active in Germany, produced this work during his later career. By this period, his practice shifted from the bold, Fauvist-influenced colours of his earlier years toward a more meditative, structured approach. This piece reflects his preoccupation with the human face as a vehicle for spiritual expression, reduced to its most essential geometric components.
The composition is divided into distinct, flat planes of colour. A vertical axis separates the canvas, suggesting the bridge of a nose, while curved forms define the chin and jawline. The palette is restrained, relying on muted blues, ochres, and soft pinks to create a sense of calm. Small, circular motifs appear in the upper quadrants, acting as celestial markers that evoke the sunrise mentioned in the title. These elements are not intended to represent a literal landscape, but rather to suggest a state of mind or a metaphysical presence.
Jawlensky was a member of the Blue Rider group, and his work often sought to transcend the material world. In this painting, the simplification of form allows the viewer to focus on the interplay of light and shadow across the surface. The brushwork is controlled, maintaining a consistent texture that unifies the disparate shapes. This work demonstrates his move toward a series of 'Abstract Heads' or 'Meditations', where the subject matter becomes a vessel for internal reflection. The lack of specific detail encourages an engagement with the pure relationships between colour and shape, characteristic of his mature style.
