A classic example of De Stijl, Theo van Doesburg's *Composition in dissonances* features a grid of pastel-coloured rectangles and squares, defined by bold black lines, creating a harmonious and balanced abstract composition.
Theo van Doesburg, born Christian Emil Marie Küpper, was a Dutch artist who practised painting, writing, poetry, and architecture. He is best known as a founder and leading figure of De Stijl (The Style). This Dutch artistic movement advocated pure abstraction and universality by a reduction to the essentials of form and colour; he co-founded the movement's magazine, *De Stijl*, in 1917. *Composition in dissonances* is a classic example of De Stijl's principles. The painting is composed of a grid of rectangles and squares, each filled with a different pastel colour. The colours are soft and muted, creating a sense of harmony and balance. The black lines that define the shapes provide a strong contrast, giving the composition a sense of structure and order. The overall effect is one of calm and serenity, reflecting the De Stijl movement's utopian ideals.
