A graphite study by Willem de Famars Testas, featuring a panoramic view of the Nile cataracts alongside a scene of two figures in traditional attire.
This graphite sketch by the Dutch artist Willem de Famars Testas captures a dual perspective of his travels in Egypt. The composition is divided into two distinct registers. The upper portion provides a panoramic view of the Nile, specifically referencing the cataracts, rendered with light, economical strokes that suggest the rocky terrain and the expanse of the river. The artist’s hand is precise, focusing on the essential contours of the geography rather than atmospheric detail.
The lower portion shifts focus to a domestic or intimate scene involving two figures. One individual stands, attending to the other who is seated, perhaps engaged in a grooming or ritualistic task. The figures are depicted in traditional attire, reflecting the artist's interest in the daily life and customs of the region. The inclusion of handwritten annotations, such as 'Dans les cataractes' and 'Esné oct 09', provides a clear indication of the work's origin as a field study or travel diary entry.
Testas was a frequent visitor to the Middle East, and his work often documents the specificities of the Egyptian environment during the mid-nineteenth century. This drawing functions as a personal record, prioritising observation and documentation over formal composition. The paper shows signs of age, with a warm, neutral tone that complements the delicate graphite lines. This piece offers a glimpse into the working methods of an artist dedicated to capturing the reality of his surroundings during a period of significant European interest in North African culture.
