This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshifuji, produced in 1882, captures the cultural friction during the Meiji period in Japan. The title, Kaika kyūhei kōhai kurabe, translates to a comparison between the new, enlightened ways and the old, antiquated customs. Yoshifuji, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, often utilised his work to comment on the rapid westernisation occurring within Japanese society at the time.
The composition depicts a chaotic scene where figures representing traditional Japanese life clash with symbols of western modernisation. One can observe characters wielding western items such as umbrellas, lamps, and clocks as weapons against those dressed in traditional samurai attire. The print functions as a visual satire, documenting the confusion and humour found in the transition between the Edo period and the modern Meiji era. The use of bold lines and a clear, graphic colour palette is characteristic of the late Ukiyo-e style, which began to incorporate more western-influenced pigments and printing techniques.
